SUB-PROJECT 3

Title:

Mathematical modelling of pneumonia pathophysiology

Coordination:

Prof. Dr. Julio Vera-González, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Dermatology

Subproject 3 of the CAPSyS consortium aims at integrating quantitative in vitro and in vivo data from experiments in subproject 4 into mathematical models of the pathophysiology of lung infection (Figure 1). The mathematical models will be used to construct, refine, and test hypotheses about the regulation of the intracellular pathways crucial for lung immune response and barrier dysfunction during pneumonia. To this end:

  TP1

a) Mathematical models describing critical aspects of local lung inflammation and barrier dysfunction in pneumonia will be derived.
b) These models will be calibrated, refined, and tested using insights and quantitative data from deep phenotyping of patients and from in vivo and in vitro experiments performed in the consortium.
c) Model simulations will be used to design experimental hypotheses on the intracellular pathways crucial for lung immune response and barrier dysfunction, to be tested by the experimental partners in subproject 4 of the consortium.
